The copper plate is close in size to The Traghetto [233] and The Garden [194], though slightly smaller. The verso is distinguished by small flakes of copper, and the plate was probably made for Whistler in Venice. 5
5: Getscher 1970.
The copper plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line.
