It is not known if this plate was sold at Whistler's bankruptcy sale, bought by the Fine Art Society, and retrieved, after Whistler's death, with other plates from Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851) by Whistler's sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). At the request of Miss Philip, three impressions were printed in 1931 by Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956), who commented that the plate was 'greatly worne' [sic]. 7 The plate was then cancelled with a diagonal line just above the bottom edge. It was given by Miss Philip to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
