The copper plate is very close in size to Black Eagle [439], and may date from the same time. An etching needle was used to draw through the ground on the plate but it was not completed, bitten or cancelled.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903, and was given by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
