SALES & COLLECTORS
In 1903, shortly before Whistler's death, the London print-dealer Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851) bought this etching - under the title, 'The Hole in the Wall Ajaccio -' from Whistler for a surprisingly high price, £12.12.0. 11

Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) noted that in 1909 there were impressions in the collections of John Caldwell (fl. 1887-1907), Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) () and Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) (). One impression was acquired by Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937) (). Only two other impressions are known, both of which remained in Whistler's estate; one was given () and one bequeathed () by his executrix Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) to the University of Glasgow.
