Impressions taken from this plate (9) |
The copper plate does not have a maker's mark, but is close in size to a lot of Whistler's etchings including several London streets and shop-fronts such as
Rag Shop, Milman's Row, Chelsea
[329],
Price's Candle Factory
[166],
Lindsey Houses
[161],
Bird-Cages, Chelsea
[297],
Clothes-Exchange, Houndsditch. No. 2
[359], and Merton Villa, Chelsea
[381] all of which date from about 1887.
The plate remained in Whistler's studio and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). She gave permission for a few impressions to be printed by Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956) in 1931. 9 It was then cancelled with a diagonal line at right. Miss Philip gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
