The copper plate was close in size to Chancellerie, Loches
[411], which dates from the same trip in 1888. Neither bears a maker's stamp, and it is possible they were bought in France.
The copper plate was in Whistler's studio at his death, and bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the upper left corner.
