TECHNIQUE

It was conceived as an etching, with drypoint shading added in the second state. It was drawn with lively hooked, curved and zigzag broken lines suggesting trees, landscape, and some architectural features. Most of the building however was drawn with much shorter lines and dots, with roofs and stonework given shape and texture with patches of shading.

PRINTING

Only two impressions have been located. One is in dark brown ink on cream laid paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K3930103) and the second in black on ivory laid paper with a partial 'PRO PATRIA' watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K3930102). Both are trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler had printed them.
