The copper plate has no maker's mark. Several plates done on the same trip - none of which have a maker's stamp - are similar in size, including Doorway, Stables - Loches [416], Booth, Market Place, Loches [425], Rue des Bons Enfants, Tours [392], Market Women, Loches [423], Windows, Bourges [398] and Children, Amboise [432]. The plates may have been bought in Paris, en route to the Loire valley.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). It was printed at her request by Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956). 7 It was then cancelled with a diagonal line from above centre left to just left of the lower right corner. Miss Philip gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
