The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' There are a number of other plates of the same size and maker including Woman sleeping in a chair [401], Market Women: Turkeys [424], Hôtel de la Promenade, Loches [415], all dating from 1888, and some later etchings including, Mallarmé [461], Marchande de Vin, Ajaccio [485] and Mrs J. Birnie Philip [479].
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line from centre left to the lower right corner.
