DESCRIPTION

A view over a town with steep-roofed houses surrounding a garden, to rows of trees, and a river. On the far side there are fields with rolling country beyond, and a church spire on the right, under a cloudy sky.

SITE

This elaborate etching is a panoramic view from the ramparts of the town of Loches, looking out over the river Indres in the Loire valley in France. Agnes Sorel, the official mistress of King Charles VII, is buried in the château.

DISCUSSION

Whistler also collaborated with his wife on a small etching showing the buildings in the left foreground, reproduced below (View from the chateau walls, Loches [420]).
