TECHNIQUE
Drawn with a wide variety of strokes of the etching needle, from long slightly curving as well as straight outlines on the buildings, sometimes repeated several times, to wriggly expressive lines for the landscape, with short jagged, curved lines, dots and dashes for details, and small irregular patches of shading and zigzag lines for roofs, clouds and foliage.
PRINTING
Only three impressions have been located, all printed in dark brown ink with little tone. One is inscribed '1st proof' and is on ivory laid paper (). Another is also inscribed '(1)' but this may be a sales record; it is on cream laid paper taken from an old book (). Whistler kept one impression, on ivory laid paper with the countermark 'HK' (). All are trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he printed them.
