EXHIBITIONS

An impression was shown in the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900, lent by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (Graphic with a link to impression #K3850102) and one at the first Annual Exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1902, lent by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) (Graphic with a link to impression #K3850104). 7

After Whistler's death an impression was exhibited at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904, and, again lent by Mansfield (Graphic with a link to impression #K3850104), in the Memorial Exhibition in Boston in 1904 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3850104). Another, probably lent by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) (Graphic with a link to impression #K3850103) was included in the Memorial Exhibition in Paris in 1905. 8

SALES & COLLECTORS

Single impressions of this rare etching were sold by Whistler to H. Wunderlich & Co. of New York on 24 May 1889, and to Knoedler & Co., also New York dealers, on 20 July 1889, for £12.12.0. 9

Whistler kept one impression for himself (Graphic with a link to impression #K3850103). It was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) who passed it to the University of Glasgow.

Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought the impression from Wunderlich's in 1889, and bequeathed it to the Freer Gallery of Art (Graphic with a link to impression #K3850102). Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) acquired the Knoedler's impression (it was No. 10 in their list, and '(No 10)' is written on the verso) and it was later bought by Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937), and then by the Library of Congress (Graphic with a link to impression #K3850104).
