Courtyard, Rue P. L. Courier, Tours dates from 1888. Whistler and his wife visited Tours between 15 and 27 September 1888, during their honeymoon. Anticipating the publication of a set of etchings, Whistler wrote a press-release:
'Mr Whistler ... brings back with him some forty new etchings of the finest quality. Those who have seen them, in Paris, say that the elegancies of French Renaissance have never been so exquisitely rendered as in their fairy like plates ...' 1

1: Whistler to C. Hanson, [25 October 1888?], GUW #08842.

Other etchings done in Tours include The Hangman's House, Tours [393], Hôtel de la Croix Blanche [395], Rue des Bons Enfants, Tours [392] and Place Daumont, Tours [390].
