TECHNIQUE

Gold House, Brussels is pure etching, drawn with short, sharply curved and hooked broken lines for the sculpture and figures, and longer, repeated lines for the architecture. There are many flecks and small granular patches resulting from foul biting.

PRINTING

It is very rare - only four impressions have been located. Two were printed in black ink on off-white and ivory laid paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K3600102, Graphic with a link to impression #K3600104) and two in brown ink on ivory laid paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K3600103, Graphic with a link to impression #K3600105). Most were printed with light plate tone, and one with smooth, carefully graduated plate tone, adding colour to the foreground space (Graphic with a link to impression #K3600104). They are all trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he printed them.
