SALES & COLLECTORS
Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought an impression from Dr James M. Hart on 1 October 1896 (). Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) owned an impression by 1900 (). Freer's one was bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art, and Lathrop's went to the Art Institute of Chicago. An impression with Whistler's signature and inscription '1st proof' was acquired by Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937) and was later bought by the Library of Congress (). Another impression of the first state, inscribed by Whistler 'Fishing Quai Ostende / 1st State' was bought by the Hamburger Kunsthalle (). One impression was left to Whistler's sister-in-law who bequeathed it to the University of Glasgow ().
