PRINTING
Only two impressions of Market Place, Ostend have been located. Printed in dark brown ink on light-weight cream laid paper, one was trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he had printed it, and judging by the form of the butterfly, that was done immediately after it was etched, probably in 1887 (). A similar impression, with light plate tone wiped vertically across the plate, leaving more at the bottom to add colour to the bare foreground, was printed on ivory laid paper, and similarly signed ().
