TECHNIQUE
Baby Pettigrew is an etching. Patches of parallel shading overlap and cross the outlines of the figure, which is drawn with slightly uneven, jerky, broken lines, dots and dashes.
PRINTING
Five impressions have been recorded, one having stayed in Whistler's estate (). The '1st Proof' is printed in dark brown ink on ivory laid paper with a partial 'PRO PATRIA' watermark, and is trimmed to the platemark and signed on a tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler printed it (). Another impression is on cream laid paper with a similar watermark, 'Pro Patria AS' and is signed but not trimmed (). A third, which is numbered 'No 3' (but not in Whistler's hand) is on ivory laid paper with a partial crown watermark, and is neither trimmed nor signed ().
