TECHNIQUE
It is pure etching. It was drawn with short curved, bouncy, and jagged lines, plus more sinuous lines on the figures, and a very few patches of shading. There are a lot of flecks and traces of earlier work.
PRINTING
The Ramparts, Sandwich is very rare. Two impressions are in black ink, one on ivory laid paper () and one on an off-white, almost grey paper (); another is in dark brown ink on a watermarked ivory laid paper (). All were trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp' to show that Whistler printed them.
