TECHNIQUE
It is mostly etching, although the lighter shading added in the second and third states was done in drypoint. In the third state, the heavy cross hatching of the interior was added in etching.
PRINTING
There was a limited print-run. Several impressions are in black ink (i.e. ), and three in dark brown (i.e. ). Two are on cream laid paper (), one of these removed from a book (; two are on buff laid paper with the 'PRO PATRIA' watermark (, ), and one on a light-weight off-white laid paper (). They were trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp' to show that Whistler printed them.
