TECHNIQUE
This is mainly an etching; there are only small patches of drypoint shading - on the flag in front of gabled house at left as well as on the door and lower windows of the central gabled house. Whistler drew with short, broken strokes of the needle, and a few uneven patches of shading.
PRINTING
There was probably a limited print-run of under ten impressions of Salvation Army, Sandwich. Most are printed in black ink with very light plate tone; one is on cream laid paper taken from a book (
), another on ivory laid paper with the watermark of a crown over 'GR' (). They were trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler printed them.
