'The Cock and the Pump', Wedmore's title, is based on Whistler's, and is preferred.

A village square bounded by an iron railing, with a group of four small girls standing in the left foreground and a cockerel on the right. Behind them is a figure crouching down. Behind the railing at left is a tall village pump with a pail in front of it, and to right, a cattle trough, with several figures, mostly children, around it. Across the street, on a corner at the right, is a house with a steep roof and over-hanging second storey. In a similar building on the corner at the left is a shop with a wide many-paned shop-window. Between these, a street runs into the distance at right, bounded by two and three-storey houses, and busy with people.

The Cattle Market in Sandwich, an old town in Kent, UK: Hopkinson described it as

'a view looking down the top of Delf Street from the south side of the junction of Cattle Market and Harnet Street. The building at the left etched by Whistler has been replaced this century by a garage, but that at the right is still recognisable. Both the horse trough and town pump at the left in Whistler's print have since been removed. The latter was rendered obsolete when a piped water supply was installed in 1949. The foreground where the children are standing in a ring is at present occupied by a disused shelter of the East Kent Road Car Company.' 7

Whistler etched several street scenes in Sandwich including Salvation Army, Sandwich [319], Double Doorway, Sandwich [322], Doorway, Sandwich [323] and Butcher's Shop, Sandwich, Kent [320].
