                        The Cock and the Pump  dates from 1887. It was etched  in Sandwich, Kent, which was visited by Whistler in the late summer or early autumn  of 1887. 
The butterfly signature is consistent with this date. The first recorded sale was on 21 December  1887 to Thomas M. McLean (b. ca 1832). 1
