TECHNIQUE
The plate for The Hoop (Gray's Inn) was executed in pure etching.
PRINTING
Only one impression of this etching has been located, although there are records of two having been sold by the artist; the impression that has been located was printed in very dark brown ink, carefully wiped so that it is darker at the bottom, on 'antique' (pre-1800) laid paper with a partial watermark of a crown, orb and cross (). It was trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp' to show that he had printed it.
