The Baby, Gray's Inn probably dates from 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date. Given that it shows children seated on the grass it probably dates from the summer of 1887. In that summer Whistler worked in Gray's Inn on a number of etchings that are considered to form the 'Grey's Inn Set' including The Young Tree
