Melon Shop, Houndsditch probably dates from 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date. The etching may date from the summer or early autumn, when melons would have been available and the weather hot enough to sit out. It is similar in size to some other etchings dating from 1887 (i.e. The Visitors' Boat
[303]).
However, it could possibly date from the early summer of 1888, and was first recorded in June 1888, when Whistler sold an impression to Wunderlich & Co., New York. 1
Other etchings done in this area include St James's Place, Houndsditch [255] and Nut Shop, St James's Place, Houndsditch [356].
