Merton Villa, Chelsea probably dates from the spring of 1888. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date. It was first recorded as sold on 29 June 1888. 1 It was dedicated to 'Trix', Whistler's wife-to-be, Beatrice Whistler (1857-1896); they were married in August 1888.
