TECHNIQUE
It is pure etching, drawn with a mixture of wiry long lines, broken curving and hooked lines and patches of shading and zigzags, cross-hatched in the deepest shadows.
PRINTING
Shampoo Shop, St Martin's Lane is very rare. The first proof was printed in dark brown ink on ivory laid paper with the Arms of Amsterdam watermark (); others are in both dark brown () and black ink on ivory laid paper (). All are trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he printed it.
