The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.'
It is close in size to a large number of plates including another London view (Cutler Street, Houndsditch [361]), one Jubilee naval scene (The Visitors' Boat [303]), figure subjects (i.e. Cameo, No. 1 (Mother and Child) [459]) and several continental scenes (i.e. Fishing Quay, Ostend [351], Little Drawbridge, Amsterdam [448]). These date from between 1887 and 1889.
It was in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903, bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), and given by her to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower right corner.
