Rag Shop, Milman's Row, Chelsea dates from 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date.
This may have been the 'Rag Shop' of which Whistler printed three impressions on 4 September 1887. 1 The first sale of what Whistler called 'The Rag shop / Chelsea', which may have been this etching, was on 5 October 1887. 2
The first certain references to this etching, under the title 'Milman's Row (large)', were in sales to Wunderlich & Co., New York, and Messrs Dowdeswell, London, in 1888. 3
