TECHNIQUE
 This plate was executed in etching, with just a few drypoint additions within and under the archway.
PRINTING
The first proof  of The Barber's Shop, Chelsea was printed in dark brown ink on 'antique' (pre-1800)  laid paper, with light, even tone  (
). Most are in   dark brown ink, several on ivory laid (
, 
, 
) and  ivory 'antique'  laid (
, 
);  off-white light-weight laid with 'GR' watermark (
); and in   brown ink  on ivory laid paper with a dyed red edge at right, removed from a book (
). Other impressions are in black ink on cream laid paper with a Seven Provinces watermark   (
) and warm black ink on cream laid with 'IV' water- or countermark (
). All are trimmed to the platemark and signed with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he had printed them.
