TECHNIQUE
This plate was executed in etching, with just a few drypoint additions within and under the archway.
PRINTING
The first proof of The Barber's Shop, Chelsea was printed in dark brown ink on 'antique' (pre-1800) laid paper, with light, even tone (). Most are in dark brown ink, several on ivory laid (, , ) and ivory 'antique' laid (, ); off-white light-weight laid with 'GR' watermark (); and in brown ink on ivory laid paper with a dyed red edge at right, removed from a book (). Other impressions are in black ink on cream laid paper with a Seven Provinces watermark () and warm black ink on cream laid with 'IV' water- or countermark (). All are trimmed to the platemark and signed with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he had printed them.
