The Barber's Shop, Chelsea probably dates from December 1886. The butterfly signature is consistent with a date of 1886 or 1887.

The newspaper poster seen in front of the shop, advertising Fred Carlos, provides this precise date. Carlos played Sloper Crusoe in a production of Robinson Crusoe at the Grand Theatre in 1886. 1
