TECHNIQUE
While the plate began as pure etching, with just one small patch of fine drypoint shading above the walking women on the first state known, Whistler added small amounts of shading in both drypoint and etching during the course of the plate's development. He noted the burr on one impression, writing '1st. state - slight burr -' on the verso ().
PRINTING
It is fairly rare. On 18 July 1889
Whistler had three impressions in stock. 8
8: List, GUW #13235.
It was mostly printed in dark brown ink, on various laid papers: one on 'antique' (pre-1800) cream laid paper with a water- or countermark, possibly 'LR' (); another with an illegible watermark (); and one on cream paper with a foolscap watermark (). One impression is in black ink on ivory laid paper with a water- or countermark, possibly 'I H Co' ().
