Four states are known.
State 2
The arch is darkened by cross-hatching, making the people and the lantern more distinct; shading is added on the cornice; light drypoint shading is added on the ground in front of the arch and on the wall to the right.
State 4
Additional shading augments the shadows in the upper half of the arch, particularly at right.
