STATE
Five states are known before cancellation.
State 1
Signed with a butterfly on the awning at right.
The composition is complete; the saleswoman lacks facial features; there are traces of figures in the open space to left of centre.
State 2
Fine diagonal shading is added to the shadows under the awning at upper right; short diagonal drypoint lines are added between two smaller figures beside the table at left; traces of figures in the open space are worn or reduced.
State 3
Strong diagonal lines are added above and to each side of the saleswoman and the circular lamp; strong diagonal shading is extended in the background, under the awning at upper right.
State 4
Additional diagonal drypoint shading is added to the background, between the two children at left and to left of the saleswoman's head.
State 5
Facial features are added on the saleswoman in the centre; some of the background shading under the awning is partially reduced and replaced with new shading and cross-hatching: there are long diagonal lines at left and close cross-hatching around the central saleswoman and under the awning; a cluster of short lines is added between the two groups of children at right.
