PRINTING
On 4 September 1887 Whistler printed three impressions of 'Rag Shop'. It may be that the second state was done at this time. Furthermore, on 18 July 1889 Whistler said that he had three proofs of 'Rag Shop Chelsea' in stock. However, in each case, he could have been referring to this etching, or Rag Shop, Milman's Row, Chelsea
[329] or The Rag Shop, Milman's Row
[290]. 13
Impressions were printed in dark brown ink with very light tone, usually on ivory laid paper (i.e. , ) although one is on buff or browned paper (). Most were trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler had printed them, although one is trimmed but not signed on the tab () and one, where the tab appears to have been cut off, has it re-attached () .
