STATE

Ten states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Impression: K2260101
Signed with a butterfly at lower left.

The composition is complete.

State 2

Impression: K2260202
Part of the façade of Santa Maria della Salute and some lines of its reflection are burnished out; large patches of foul biting appear along the right edge and at the lower right corner, along with a small triangular patch of foul biting at upper left.

State 3

Impression: K2260201
Most foul biting is removed, but two small patches at the right edge and the triangular patch at upper left remain.

State 4

Impression: K2260203
The remaining patches of foul biting at the right edge and upper left are removed.

State 5

Impression: K2260301
Fine drypoint shading is added on the domes and upper façade of Santa Maria della Salute; fine verticals extend the reflections of Santa Maria della Salute and the hood of the gondola at right.

State 6

Impression: K2260402
Heavier diagonal shading is added to the large dome of Santa Maria della Salute.

State 7

Impression: K2260507
Diagonal shading is added on the right side of the large dome of Santa Maria della Salute and on the two smaller domes; fine horizontal lines are added to the Salute's reflection.

State 8

Impression: K2260503
With the exception of spaces left unshaded to indicate lights, fine diagonal lines now cover the entire façade of Santa Maria della Salute as well as much of the building immediately to the right; new curved and vertical lines further define the shape of the Salute's large dome.
The impression illustrated was printed with very pale plate tone and shows the etched and drypoint lines clearly. Most impressions of this state have considerably more tone, and lines on the sky and water are less clear. Clarity of the fine drypoint work on the buildings also varies according to both the inking and wear of the plate during printing.

State 9

Impression: K2260z02
Two small dark patches of drypoint shading are added below the lights in front of Santa Maria della Salute.

State 10

Impression: K2260504
Shading is added to the left sides of Santa Maria della Salute's two small domes; two very small patches of shading are added above the leftmost light in front of the Salute.

State 10 (cancelled)

Etching: PS_K226_01 (plate)
It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line.

No impression from the cancelled plate is known. This is a digital image based on the copper plate. 7

7: A scan of the copper plate was flipped horizontally, converted to greyscale, and colour inverted, with enhanced contrast.
