The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' They were Whistler's favourite copper merchants, and he had brought four plates of this size and make to Venice, with the aim of fulfilling the Fine Art Society's commission for the 'First Venice Set'. These were Bead Stringers

and
Quiet Canal
[224], which were actually included in the 'Second Venice Set,' and Ponte Piovan
[220], which, like Nocturne: Salute, was not published at all.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower left corner.
