The copper plate has no maker's stamp and is different in size from any other plate. It was probably made in Italy by a local craftsman. 8
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). It was printed at her request by Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956) in 1931, before being cancelled with one diagonal line across the lower left corner. 9 Miss Philip gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
