The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is similar in size to two other plates from the same maker, Lagoon - Noon
[209] and Salute Dawn
[207]. It must have been brought to Venice to fulfil the Fine Art Society commission but was not included in the published set.
It was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with two closely spaced diagonal lines across the lower right corner.
