The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to three other Hughes & Kimber plates used in Venice,
Salute Dawn
[207],
Lagoon - Noon
[209] and
Old Women
[234]. These were presumably brought by Whistler to Venice to fulfil the Fine Art Society commission but the resulting drypoint was not included in the published set.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with one diagonal line to right of centre.
