STATE
Three states are known before cancellation.
State 1
There is no signature or inscription.
The two figures within the doorway are incomplete; there is a white unshaded patch behind the seated man and a smaller unshaded area between him and the standing man.
Dark dotted areas at upper left and right on the impression illustrated are the result of plate tone (ink on the surface of the plate). The only other known impression of this state is heavily touched with brown wash under the arch of the doorway, over the shading within it and on the water below (see ).
State 2
The figures and shading within the doorway are altered but not completed; the seated figure now appears to be unclothed and more like a woman; the standing figure is reduced in size.
State 3
Lines within the central area of the doorway are removed or reduced, leaving only partial outlines of the two figures and some shading.
State 3 (cancelled)
Cancelled with one diagonal line.
No impression taken from the cancelled plate has been located. It is known only from the cancelled plate.
