Three states are known.
State 1
There is no signature or inscription.
Reflections of Santa Maria della Salute are depicted with two bands of horizontal lines, one long and one short; there are prominent scraping marks at left and right, and near the lower edge of the image.
State 2
A small patch of shading is added between the two bands of reflections below Santa Maria della Salute; a curved diagonal scratch extends from the sail of the boat above the large gondola to the water.
State 3
Signed with a butterfly at lower right.
New details are added to the buildings and boats along the horizon, most notably to the sailing ships to left and right and in front of Santa Maria della Salute, and to the Salute's right dome; reflections of the Salute are fully developed, consisting of short broken lines; small patches of reflection are added to left and right of the Salute and below the large gondola at right; there are faint new lines on the sky above the horizon at right.
The scraping marks at left, right and bottom of the image remain visible on most impressions and vary according to inking, wiping and wear on the plate.
