The copper plate has no maker's stamp, and is not the same size as any other plate used in Venice. The verso is distinguished by small flakes of copper, and the plate was probably made for Whistler in Venice. 8

The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line at left.
