The Balcony dates from 1879/1880. Whistler was in Venice from September 1879 to November 1880. This probably dates from the winter of 1879-1880 when Whistler lived in the area near the Rio de San Pantalon.
The Balcony was published with the 'Second Venice Set' by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau in 1886.
