The copper plate is similar in size to The Beggars
[190], San Giorgio
[214] and
San Biagio
[237]. None of these bear a maker's mark; they were probably made for Whistler in Venice. 10

Riva, No. 2 was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with A Set of Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886. It was cancelled in several stages, first with diagonal lines, and finally with widely-spaced crossed diagonal lines.
The plate is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 11
