Upright Venice dates from 1880. Whistler arrived in Venice in September 1879. He was active in Venice from October 1879 to October 1880 and was back in London in November 1880.
According to Otto Henry Bacher (1856-1909), Upright Venice was started during the winter of 1879 to 1880, or at latest by April 1880. Bacher says it was completed 'six months' later, when he was working with Whistler. It could have been completed in October immediately before Whistler left Venice. 1
