STATE
Two states are known before cancellation.
State 1
There is no signature or inscription.
Early impressions of the first state show scratches on the sky and water, including lines that appear to be a faint remnant of a gondola prow to left of the reflection of the two long posts; the impression illustrated shows all scratches quite clearly. These scratches vary in intensity on other proofs and have worn away on later impressions of the first state (see ). While it is possible the small defects were intentionally removed from the plate, the fact that lines of the etched subject are also less pronounced on later impressions argues for wear rather than burnishing.
In this and the next state, one of the 'Second Venice Set'.
State 2
Signed with a butterfly at lower left.
In this and the previous state, one of the 'Second Venice Set'.
