The copper plate is the same size as those for Ponte Piovan
[220] and
Quiet Canal
[224], and is one of the basic sizes obtained from the London firm of Hughes & Kimber before Whistler left for Venice. It bears the firm's oval stamp, 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' on the verso.
Thus, with Ponte Piovan
[220] and
Quiet Canal
[224], it was one of the copper plates taken by Whistler to Venice in September 1879, to fulfil a commission from the Fine Art Society
for a set of etchings. However, it was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with the Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886.
The plate was cancelled first with diagonal lines and then with crossed diagonal lines. It is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 4
