San Biagio dates from 1880. Whistler arrived in Venice in September 1879. He was active in Venice from October 1879 to October 1880 and was back in London in November 1880.
San Biagio was probably done in the summer or autumn of 1880 when Whistler was staying at the Casa Jankowitz on the Riva San Biagio, because it shows the beach where his fellow American artists kept their boats. Works dating from the same period include The Riva
[229],
Riva, No. 2
[230], Upright Venice
[232], Turkeys
[236],
Old Women
[234] and Bead Stringers
[235].
San Biagio was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with the Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886.
